The work behind this book is never meant to stay on the page. The stories, the people, and the movements of change they reveal all point toward something larger: a place where others can gather, learn from one another, and explore the purpose that calls them forward. The five movements of the Heroic Change Model offer a language for that journey, but the heart of it remains human. Out of that hope, the vision for the Institute for Heroic Change is taking shape.
The Institute will be a home for the stories, practices, and people who are reshaping what leadership can be. Its work begins with a simple belief: that change does not start with expertise or authority, but with the small, human acts of courage and care that ripple outward through families, communities, and organizations. The Institute will find and celebrate these quiet heroes—people who embody presence, purpose, integrity, and belonging in their daily lives—and bring their stories to light in ways that inspire others to do the same.
But celebration is only the first step. The Institute will also create programs and tools that help people in every walk of life cultivate heroic change in their own worlds. Whether someone is serving a classroom, a precinct, a business, a hospital, a kitchen, a team, or a neighborhood, the work begins the same way: through story, purpose, and presence. The Institute will offer storytelling workshops that reconnect people to why they began, leadership experiences grounded in the five movements of the Heroic Change Model, and gatherings that bring diverse communities together to imagine new ways of living and leading with courage and care.
At its heart, the Institute for Heroic Change is an invitation: to slow down, to listen deeply, to see the dignity in one another, and to build lives shaped by integrity and presence. It is a place for people who want to bring more meaning into their work, more compassion into their relationships, and more courage into the systems and communities they help shape.
The Institute is in its earliest stages, but the intention is clear. This is the next chapter of the journey that began long before this book, the journey of learning how people change, how they heal, and how they become who they are meant to be. My hope is that, in time, it becomes a community where many journeys meet, a place where people from every walk of life can practice courage, care, and the quiet work of becoming.
